The PCC Infant Observation Committee brings to our practice community a special workshop focused on the work of Dr. Alessandra Cavalli. In researching potential topics for this year’s conference, Infant Observation Committee Chair, Dr. Persila Conversano, discovered Dr. Cavalli’s beautiful paper, “Continuous Becoming or the Experience of Coming into Being,” and then Candidate Representative Member, Jason Snyder, found a YouTube recording of the paper which Dr. Cavalli gave at the interdisciplinary forum, the Alpine Fellowship. While Dr. Cavalli passed away in 2020, we are able to share and discuss this rich presentation delivered by Dr. Cavalli herself.

Dr. Alessandra Cavalli is a psychoanalyst and clinician known for her work on childhood development and the ongoing formation of subjectivity across the lifespan. Trained in psychoanalysis and deeply engaged with contemporary relational and developmental thinking, her work explores how early experiences are not fixed events but remain alive and continuously reshaped in later psychic life. She was primarily concerned with the impact of trauma on the developing self and how transformations can evolve through the analytic process. Dr. Cavalli has written and spoken widely on themes such as becoming, dependency, creativity, and the ways children and adults negotiate vulnerability and growth within relationships.
