Sandra E. Cohen, Ph.D. is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Psychoanalytic Center of California, where she was Dean and Chair of the Education Committee from 2008-2011. Dr. Cohen has a private psychoanalytic practice in Beverly Hills, working with adults of all ages. Her area of specialization is childhood trauma, including sexual abuse and severe neglect, with the presenting symptoms of persistent depression, eating disorders, anxiety and panic, dissociative states, and perverse behaviors. Dr. Cohen published a film essay on the Curious Case of Benjamin Button in the IJPA in 2010. She has a chapter on the film Broken Embraces in Pedro Almodovar: A Cinema of Passion and Desire, co-edited by Arlene Kramer Richards and Lucille Spira and published by IP Books in 2019. She published a paper in The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child in 2021 on the history of her two great-aunts, Marie Briehl and Rosetta Hurwitz, who trained in Vienna with Anna Freud and were instrumental in bringing child psychoanalysis to the United States. Dr. Cohen uses her clinical experience to help readers understand trauma through film and TV on her blog, Characters on the Couch.
