The Value of Analysis and the Anatomy of Interpretation featuring Albert Mason, MB, BS, PsyD in celebration of his work and his 90th birthday.

Program Description

This innovative conference will include two presentations, the first on the value of analysis and the second on the anatomy of interpretation. In the first presentation, Dr. Mason will elaborate on the value of psychoanalysis as a research tool to describe psychic structure and dynamics as well as a therapeutic process for the modification of mental and psychodynamic illness. In the second presentation, he will demonstrate the technique and process of analysis by constructing, with input from audience participants, a diagram that addresses what the analyst thinks/does, what the patient thinks/does, and the connective dynamics between them, both conscious and unconscious. Particular attention will be paid to the transformative aspects of the therapeutic relationship which result in deep and lasting personality change. There will be ample time for audience discussion.

Audience

MD’s, Psychologists, LCSW’s, MFT’s, Registered Nurses, and other learners interested in developing psychoanalytic understanding.

Course Objectives

At the end of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate psychoanalysis from other forms of psychotherapeutic treatment;
  • Identify the relationship between the conscious content of a therapy session and the unconscious dynamics expressed;
  • Work through transference distortions in order to produce psychic change and improved outcomes with their patients.
